The Free Business Educational Seminar Series was hosted by the City of Fort Lauderdale in conjunction with Broward SCORE on Wednesday, October 24, 2012.  The topic was “How to Start a Business and Franchising Opportunities”.

Starting a business:

Do you dream about starting a business? You are not alone - millions of Americans share that dream. And yet, not everyone has the courage to get started. But if you are reading this you have already taken the first steps towards turning your dream into a reality.

Topics covered were:

  • Myths and Realities of Entrepreneurship
  • Do you have what it takes - Assessing your skills & experience
  • Know your options: Different types of businesses
  • Components of business ownership
  • Making it legal - The nuts & bolts of launching a new business
  • Business plan basics - Why you need a business plan

Mr. Russell Thompson a local attorney with the Law Offices of Russell M. Thompson will present the session. After retiring from a 25-year career in management, he put his management and legal knowledge to work for clients.  Mr. Thompson possesses clear and effective verbal communication skills and is a Toastmasters International, Competent Communicator. In addition to volunteering as a counselor with SCORE he is a Volunteer Attorney for the Tracey McPharlin Dependency Pro Bono Project, where he represents children in dependency court.

Self-Employment through Franchising:

 

Franchising can mitigate the risk of starting a new business and lead to long-term success.

 

This workshop was all about franchising. The presenter was a professional with many years of experience in helping people get into a business via franchising. He has seen it all. He shared both a broad view of what franchising is about and generated a lively and in-depth discussion on the details one needs to know.

  • Personal attributes needed to be an entrepreneur
  • What you need to know about franchising
  • Why franchising works
  • What is needed to start a franchise
  • Determining the right franchise for you
  •  Ways to get into franchising

 

The presenter was Michael P. Bush, a Franchise Broker with TransWorld Business Brokers. Along with his wife, Lauren, he is a franchise owner of the Huntington Learning Center of Coral Springs, FL. After 23 years with BellSouth, AT&T and MCI, he reengineered his career to be a Franchise Consultant and for 8 years has helped match great people with great franchises. Michael is an active SCORE volunteer with Broward SCORE.
